Airport transit visa
You need an airport transit visa if you are citizen from the following countries:
You do not need an airport transit visa if you hold a valid Schengen visa, or a long-stay visa or residence permit issued by a European Union country, or if you hold a valid residence permit issued by Andorra, Canada, Japan, San Marino or the United States of America, or if you hold a valid visa issued by Canada, the United States of America or Japan.
The airport transit visa does not allow to exit the International Transit Zone. This area is closed at night. If you spend one night in France, you have to apply for a short stay visa.
An airport transit visa does not allow to board a flight between two Schengen countries. If you make two or more transits in the Schengen area, you must apply for a short stay visa. For example you need a Schengen visa for a trip Bogota-Paris-Amsterdam-Nairobi.
In Paris there are two airports: Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY), which are located north and south of the city. If your connection requires you to change airports, you will need a Schengen visa.
If you have a layover of several hours at a French airport you cannot apply for a Schengen visa. Only people who have a hotel reservation may apply for a tourist visa.
For security reasons, all applicants, except children under the age of 12, have to appear personally at the visa section.
